What is Partner Yoga?

Partner Yoga, or also known as Couples Yoga, is a form that should be practised by two people.

The word “yoga” literally means ‘union’ and that’s what this form is all about, building a stronger connection and intimacy between two individuals through various poses.

It doesn’t even matter whether it’s a personal relationship, a family one, or friendship because partner yoga can help bring people closer and make them a lot healthier.

If you have been watching a lot of yoga videos lately then there’s a chance you have already come across one about the couples yoga challenge.

If you are interested in trying it out with your partner then you’re in the right place because that’s what we are going to talk about today.

Written below are some of the couples yoga challenge poses you need to achieve along with the benefits you’ll get when you and your better half give them a try.

Are you ready?

If you are then let’s begin.

Different Couples Yoga Challenge Poses You Can Try

•    Partner Breathing – Probably the best way to start a couples yoga challenge routine. Read the following to find out how you can do it.

  • Sit back to back with your legs crossed at the ankles.
  • Put your hands on your knees or thighs.
  • Try your best to connect with your partner. If you can, study the way he/she breathes. Take note of the duration, feeling, and even pattern if there’s one.
  • Start doing alternate breathing. If you exhale then he/she must inhale. Do this exercise for at least 3 minutes before moving on the next one.

•    Twin Trees – This pose promotes better focus for both of you. Take a look at the following to see how you can achieve it.

  • Stand next to each other and look in the same direction.
  • Make sure that you are at least 3 feet apart from each other and then bring your palms and elbows together.
  • Next, shift your entire weight to your right foot and have your partner do the same but on the left foot.
  • Bend the other leg and place your feet on the ankle, thigh, or calf, whichever is easier.
  • Hold that position for at least 5 breaths then turn to the opposite direction and do the same pose using your other feet.

•    Assisted Backbend (Anuvittasana) – This will help open up your back and heart; it can also make the mood in the room lighter. Check out the steps on how to do it.

  • Stand back to back with your partner.
  • Hook your elbows together.
  • Whoever’s going to be the first base of the pose must bend their knees, ready their core, and slowly lean forward.
  • The person on top must then let go of any resistance and lean back as the base is leaning forward. Stop when both of the top’s feet are off the ground.
  • Hold that position for a few breaths. Then the base must slowly straighten his/her knee until the top’s feet are back on the ground.
  • Switch positions and do it for a few more times.

•    Partner Twist – Another one of the couples yoga challenge poses you’ll find here. This pose will help cleanse the body. Here’s how you can do this pose.

  • Sit back to back with your partner and cross your legs at the shins.
  • Put your hands on your knees or thighs.
  • Reach your arms overhead, inhale while doing it.
  • Exhale the air and twist your body to the right. Your right hand must end up on the inner left knee of your partner while your left hand should be at the outer part of your right knee or thigh.
  • Hold the position for at least 5 breaths.
  • Exhale and assume the first position. Do it then on the left side.

•    Half Lord of the Fishes Pose – This one is quite easy to achieve. It is also quite intimate when done with a partner. These are the steps to do it.

  • Sit back to back with your partner and then cross your legs.
  • Inhale your arms up.
  • Exhale slowly and then twist your body to the right.
  • Place your right hand on your partner’s left knee, shin, or thigh.
  • Then pull back and do the original position. Inhale again, this time longer, and reach for your partner’s left knee/shin/thigh again. But for the second time, try to reach further the part you’ve chosen to touch.
  • Hold the position for 5 to 10 breaths and then switch sides.

Other Couples Yoga Challenge Poses You Can Try

•    Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana)

•    Camel Pose + Plow (Ustrasana + Halasana)
