Believe it or not, there’s a certain diet that can help you lose weight for muscles without all the fuss.

And it’s been around way longer than the Atkins diet or the infamous ketogenic diet… It’s the steak and eggs diet!

This highly-trusted diet has helped many people, including celebrities.

What is the steak and eggs diet?

The steak and eggs diet is a particular way of eating developed by “Iron Guru” bodybuilder Vince Gironda way back in the 1950s.

He believes that one’s diet is more important than exercise when it comes to sculpting the perfect bodybuilder body.

That’s because for him, what you eat greatly impacts fat burning and promoting muscle mass.

He came up with a very controversial (and famous) diet that completely eliminates carbohydrates altogether.

If you want to look like Vince Gironda, you’d live off fats and protein in the form of steak and eggs.

How to do the steak and eggs diet

The steak and eggs diet is fairly simple and you really only need 3 things to make it work:




Well, 5 if you count salt and pepper to season your food. But mainly, you’ll be eating nothing but steak and eggs for 5 straight days.

You are allowed 2 meals each day all throughout the 5 days.

And you can choose either a breakfast and dinner combo or a lunch and dinner chow time.

Here’s what a usual day looks like for someone who prefers to eat for lunch and dinner while on the steak and eggs diet:

Breakfast: None

Lunch: 340 to 680 grams of steak (cooked any way you want with butter, seasoned with salt and pepper) + 4 to 6 eggs (cooked any way you want with butter, seasoned with salt and pepper)

Dinner: 340 to 680 grams of steak (cooked any way you want with butter, seasoned with salt and pepper) + 4 to 6 eggs (cooked any way you want with butter, seasoned with salt and pepper)

Once you get through the 5 days of exclusive steak and eggs diet, you’re allowed 1 cheat day on the 6th day wherein you can eat whatever you want.

Then you’ll have to start the cycle all over again and repeat until you’re happy with your weight and how you look.


Before I forget, you’re also allowed water, tea and coffee but no sweeteners whatsoever.

It still sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?!

Does the steak and eggs diet work?

The first time I knew of the steak and eggs diet, I immediately thought it was bogus.

Because why not?

It’s hard to imagine that I can actually eat something as luxurious as steak and use all the butter I want but still be on a diet!

But later on, I realized that it could really work due to one thing:


Yes, my friends!

The steak and eggs diet is a low carb, high fat and protein diet which aims to get your body to ketosis mode and let it buuurn for at least 5 days.

I say “at least” because I read other steak and eggs diet plans indicating 6 days instead.

When your body is deprived of carbohydrates, it turns to fat as a source of energy.

Without grains, sugar and starch, your body is now left with no choice but to burn fat as fuel.

And if you look closely at how the steak and eggs diet is laid out, you’ll also notice that you’ll actually be on an intermittent fast should you go down the lunch and dinner route.


So should you go ahead and start stocking up on steak and eggs and butter? Not so fast.

Final Thoughts

Like any other diet plans out there, the steak and eggs diet isn’t really for everybody.

If you have a medical condition or if you’re taking medications, it is best to err on the side of caution.

Make sure to consult a health professional before starting this diet or any meal plan for that matter.

Other than that, I can say that the steak and eggs diet is a very promising means of losing weight.

In fact, it has everything a diet needs in order for it to succeed:

  • It is very easy to follow. There’s not a lot of diet plans out there that gives you freedom on how to cook your daily meals.
  • You can get everything you need for the steak and eggs diet wherever part of the world you are. And since you really only need 3 main ingredients, it isn’t that hard to shop!
  • It requires little to no preparation. Depending on how you cook your steak, you might have to prep the grill. But at least there’s no chopping required.
  • It is a low carbohydrate + intermittent fasting diet which means it will most likely lead to weight loss.
  • You’ll get tons of protein to help you build muscle if that’s one of your goals.
  • You will consume lots of fat to fuel your body. You can pick a fatty steak or go hard on the butter.
  • Steak and eggs are satiating, which means there’s lesser chances of snacking or eating anything else.
  • There’s no limit to the amount of water, tea or coffee you can drink, so long as it isn’t sweetened! I read that the Iron Guru also allows a big serving of salad for dinner if you really need or want to eat some.
  • There’s a cheat day. And that means a lot when you’re on a diet. It is something you can look forward to and something that won’t make you feel as restricted. I mean, compare that with eating only steak and eggs for eternity, right?

But there’s one con to the steak and eggs diet that I can’t seem to deny.

And that is the fact that this type of diet isn’t something you can do long term.

I can only begin to think of the other health consequences (aside from weight loss and ripped muscles) you’d have to face if you stick to this diet for a long time.

Don’t get me wrong. You still get some nutrition from consuming only steak, eggs and butter.

But I have yet to find legit information from scientific and/or medical studies saying that the steak and eggs diet is truly healthy.

And eating healthy, for me, is the ultimate goal.

Still, there’s no denying that the steak and eggs diet is killing it in the short-term weight loss game, at least for those who want it quick and easy.
